Title: Immigration research, social media data and text mining
Abstract: Traditionally, the social sciences have relied on survey data to study patterns of ethnic segregation and intergroup prejudice. In a digitally connected world, however, research is needed on online segregation and sentiments. In this talk, I’ll give an overview of a new research project in computational social science, which combines sociological research with text mining techniques. I will present findings from several studies in which we (1) quantified ethnic segregation on Facebook, (2) examined determinants of anti-immigrant sentiments expressed on Twitter, and (3) looked at the portrayal of outgroups in online news messages
